Habitat
HomeStores are retail outlets where quality used and surplus
building materials are sold at a fraction of normal prices.
Proceeds from HomeStores help local affiliates fund the
construction of Habitat houses within the community. Many
affiliates across the United States and Canada operate
successful HomeStores, some of which raise enough funds to build
an additional 10 or more houses per year.
Materials
sold by Habitat HomeStores are usually donated from building
supply stores, contractors, demolition crews or from individuals
who wish to show their support for Habitat. In addition to
raising funds, HomeStores help the environment by rechanneling
good, usable materials into use.

Over 150 Habitat
for Humanity HomeStores exist in the US and Canada, selling
quality new and sed building materials to the public at
significant discounts. In doing so, the HomeStores create a link
between those who have good quality materials they no longer
need, and those who could use these materials for the renovation
and upkeep of their homes. HomeStores keep building materials
from being taken to the landfill, while the proceeds from their
operations help fund the building efforts of Habitat for
Humanity.
HomeStores vary
greatly in size and volume, ranging from those that resemble
semi-annual garage sales to a few that have annual sales in
excess of $500,000. They accept donations such as doors,
windows, flooring, plumbing and electrical fixtures, and
cabinets. All materials sold by the HomeStore are donated by
individuals, manufacturers, contractors and businesses in
support of Habitat for Humanity. The items may be new surplus,
slow moving, outdated or just gently used. Donors may benefit by
avoiding landfill fees, and by receiving a tax deduction on
their contributions. Buyers benefit by saving 50-75% of retail
on good quality building materials.
The HomeStore is
an ambitious project, and we need the help of a lot of people in
many different ways to make it successful. You can help by
volunteering, donating good used building materials, or simply
by shopping at the Habitat HomeStore. |
