Open the Door to Opportunity This Spring with Habitat ChesCo

Spring ushers in a season of growth, renewal, and new possibilities. At Habitat for Humanity of Chester County (Habitat ChesCo), it’s a time to celebrate the transformative power of home. A safe place to live is more than shelter; it opens the door to improved health, education, and long-term stability for families and communities.

This April, we celebrate Fair Housing Month, commemorate the Fair Housing Act (April 11, 1968), and honor our incredible volunteers during National Volunteer Week (April 19–25). Together, these milestones highlight the essential role housing plays in fostering opportunity, equity, and belonging.

Why Is Fair Housing Still Important Today?

The Fair Housing Act of 1968 marked a critical turning point in the pursuit of equitable housing. For the first time, it prohibited discrimination based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, familial status, or disability. Its passage reflected the power of communities standing up for fairness, but more than 50 years later, many families still face barriers to stable housing.

At Habitat ChesCo, the principles of fair housing guide our work every day. We partner with families, volunteers, and local organizations to ensure that access to housing is not limited by circumstance. A safe, stable home does more than provide a place to live; it creates the conditions for educational success, improved health, financial security, and deeper community connection.

Fair Housing Month reminds us that progress requires both honoring the past and continuing to take action so every family has the chance to thrive. Through programs like homeownership, home repair, and advocacy for inclusive policies such as zoning and fair financing, Habitat ChesCo is actively working to remove barriers that stand between families and stability. In doing so, we’re helping open doors that have been closed to too many families for far too long.

What Inspires People to Volunteer with Habitat ChesCo?

Volunteers are the heartbeat of Habitat ChesCo. Whether swinging a hammer on construction sites, supporting ReStore operations, or leading neighborhood initiatives, each volunteer plays a vital role in strengthening our community. During National Volunteer Week (April 19–25), we recognize the dedication, energy, and compassion of those who give their time to support local families.

Volunteers don’t just help build homes; they help create opportunity, confidence, and connection. Every nail hammered and every hour contributed supports long-term success for families and opens the door to new possibilities.

  • Volunteers contribute over 8.4 million hours annually to Habitat in the U.S., directly reducing building costs and increasing the number of families served.1

  • People who volunteer regularly report better health, stronger social connections, and increased civic engagement.2

By showing up, volunteers help build stronger, more inclusive communities. Each person brings their own story, motivation, and inspiration to the work. Hear from a couple of them:

“I have been able to volunteer with Habitat in the past and really enjoyed the experience. Getting to meet the future homeowner and know what the project meant to her was inspiring and extremely fulfilling. To be able to work together with a group of women and feel the empowerment of building something while seeing the impact of that gift was something that really excited me about the opportunity.”

Amanda Capoferri, Women Build Volunteer

“As a chaperone for summer youth group camps, I was inspired to learn skills for home repair and (re)construction projects. Building with Habitat has allowed me to use those skills to provide affordable homes for individuals and, especially, families!  It is a great opportunity to give back to my community!”

Ceilia, Volunteer

How Does Stable Housing Change Lives?

When families achieve permanent housing, the impact extends far beyond the front door; it shapes futures and strengthens entire communities.

The benefits of stable housing are clear:

  • Children in stable housing are 25% more likely to graduate high school and 116% more likely to graduate college than those in unstable homes.3

  • Homeowners have a net worth that is roughly 40 times greater than that of renters.4

  • Families in decent homes report better physical and mental health, fewer hospital visits, and improved overall well-being.3

  • The U.S. has a shortage of more than 800,000 affordable homes, locking millions out of homeownership.5

Your support helps ensure every family can experience the stability, opportunity, and equity that come with a permanent home.

Gift Stability, Opportunity, and a Brighter Future

In 2016, Lauren and Andy opened the door to their Habitat home in Coatesville. As longtime Chester County residents who had always rented, they knew homeownership would change their lives, but the impact was even greater than they imagined. Owning a home gave their family a strong foundation for the future. With that stability, Lauren returned to school to pursue a degree in Nutritional Sciences at West Chester University, where she will graduate this May. Their home has become a space filled with traditions, holiday gatherings, lively game nights, and hands-on projects where Andy discovered a passion for home maintenance.

“Homeownership has given our family stability, security, and the opportunity to grow over the past decade. Having an affordable and dependable home has allowed us to focus on raising our children and supporting one another.”
