Building Futures, Brick by Brick: Celebrating National Homeownership Month with Habitat Chesco

June is National Homeownership Month! More than a time to celebrate the profound impact of having a place to call home, it is also an opportunity to recognize the challenging journey toward homeownership and the ongoing responsibilities that come with it. At Habitat for Humanity of Chester County, we partner with local families to build houses and brighter, more secure futures.

The Housing Landscape in Chester County

Row of Homes by Habitat for Humanity of Chester County

The need for housing that is affordable in Chester County has never been more urgent. Home prices continue to climb, making homeownership unattainable for many working individuals and families. In April 2025, the median home price in Chester County reached $557,000, a 7.7% increase from last year, and homes are now taking longer to sell, reflecting a cooling market still out of reach for most.* The average home value has risen to $564,180, up 3.9% from last year.**

This is not just a low-income issue; it's a workforce issue. With housing prices skyrocketing, many working individuals—teachers, first responders, nurses, and service workers—are being priced out of the very communities they serve. These individuals are essential to Chester County's vitality and deserve access to stable housing they can afford.

More Than Just Building Homes: Our Homeownership Program

At Habitat Chesco, our mission is about more than construction—it's about transformation. Through our Homeownership Program, we work alongside families, empowering them to achieve long-term success and stability. Partnering families don't receive a free home. They invest hundreds of hours of "sweat equity" helping build their own homes and their neighbors' homes. They attend financial literacy and homeownership readiness workshops and, upon completion, purchase their homes through an affordable mortgage.

With support from volunteers, donors, and the entire Chester County community, we build strength, stability, and self-reliance through shelter.

The Impact of Homeownership

The impact of having a safe, affordable place to live is best told through the voices of Habitat Chesco homeowners:

The Weatherby Family from Habitat for Humanity of Chester County

"Owning our own home has been a game changer in many ways for our family. Everything from having the room that we need as a family of four to knowing we have a safe, clean space that is ours. It brings a sense of pride to know that we have something to call our own. It also brings a feeling of security knowing we live in a community of people who feel the same way."

— The Weatherby Family

Jen Pursell and Family from Habitat for Humanity of Chester County

"Before knowing about Habitat, I felt very stuck. I couldn’t afford the normal cost of living, let alone a mortgage, and Section 8 had no comfortable places, but I always wanted better for my kids. I feel so blessed beyond words for this opportunity. I still get emotional about it. I cannot wait to show my kids their new home, where they will be raised until they're grown while creating memories that will last a lifetime.”

— Jen Pursell

These stories are just a glimpse into the transformational power of homeownership, especially when it's built on a strong foundation of community support and personal investment.

I really appreciate how Habitat for Humanity highlights long-term stability and community support through homeownership initiatives during National Homeownership Month. It feels like a reminder that building futures brick by brick is not just about construction, but also about making homes more affordable and sustainable. That’s where solar panels for apartments come in, especially when I look at solutions from A1 Solar Store for reducing long-term energy costs in residential buildings. I think this approach aligns well with the spirit of stronger, more resilient communities. I find projects like this inspiring and worth supporting for future housing development growth opportunities

I love that Habitat requires sweat equity and financial education, it really prepares families for the long term responsibility. Buying my first home felt overwhelming too, especially navigating all the costs beyond the down payment. Having a clear budget and the right financial tools made it possible. A mortgage loan was essential for me, but just as important was understanding the full picture of insurance, maintenance, and monthly payments. Stable housing truly builds stronger communities, one family at a time.

A decent home changes everything for a family, especially having control over your own space. I have volunteered on a few builds and always notice how proud new homeowners are of every detail, from the porch to the thermostat. That sense of security goes beyond just having a roof. It is knowing you can keep your family comfortable without huge bills. That is why I think smart choices like Sensibo Airbend are a perfect fit for affordable housing. Simple efficient climate control helps lower costs and makes a house feel like a real home from day one.

Homeownership brings so much pride and responsibility at once — and protecting that investment goes well beyond the mortgage. One challenge many new homeowners in older or newly built neighborhoods face is rodent activity, especially in attics, crawl spaces, and walls where structural gaps invite entry. Proper rodent removal isn't just about trapping — it means sealing every entry point, decontaminating affected areas, and eliminating the scent trails that bring rodents back. Getting this right early protects both the structure and the family inside it, which is exactly the kind of long-term thinking Habitat's homeownership program instills.

The point about homeownership coming with ongoing responsibilities is one that first-time buyers often underestimate until something goes wrong. The roof tends to be the biggest blind spot — it's invisible from the ground, easy to forget when everything looks fine, and expensive when neglect finally catches up. New homeowners in the LA area face the added challenge of UV exposure and Santa Ana conditions that age shingles faster than most national averages suggest. Scheduling a free inspection within the first year of owning a home is one of the simplest ways to understand exactly what you have before a small issue becomes a major repair. SOL Roofing offers those at no cost across the San Fernando Valley — a small…
